About the department
In the osteoporosis department (Minsk City Center for Osteoporosis and Diseases of the Musculoskeletal System), you can consult, be examined, and also undergo a course of osteoporosis treatment from the best doctors in Minsk.
For citizens of Minsk (if necessary) and for non-resident citizens, consultations with rheumatologists and examinations are provided on a paid basis, pre-registration by phone:
The most common disease of the musculoskeletal system is osteoarthritis , which affects up to 20% of the population of our planet. The incidence of osteoarthritis increases with age; in people over 50 years of age it is 27%, in people over 60 years of age it reaches 90%.
Treatment of osteoarthritis of various etiologies is still mainly symptomatic with the use of analgesics and anti-inflammatory drugs. In recent years, chondroprotectors have begun to be actively used for the treatment of osteoarthritis. This is a group of structure-modifying drugs, the action of which is based on a direct effect on the metabolism of cartilage tissue, stimulation of regeneration and reparative capabilities of chondrocytes. The use of chondroprotectors slows down degenerative changes in the joints and spine, has a delayed anti-inflammatory and analgesic effect, and allows for a long-term effect.
Osteoporosis is a chronic disease characterized by a gradual decrease in bone strength and an increased risk of fractures. Reduction of bone mass is a gradual and painless process, so there are usually no specific, characteristic symptoms that would suggest that a patient is developing osteoporosis. This is why this disease is often called the “silent epidemic.” Osteoporosis affects every third woman and every eighth man over 50 years of age. In Europe, there is one case of osteoporotic fracture every 30 seconds.
Most often, the first manifestation of osteoporosis is a fracture. In some cases, but not always, visible signs of osteoporosis in a patient include a hunched back and decreased height due to fractures of fragile vertebrae.
Since the disease does not have characteristic clinical symptoms, doctors can prescribe an examination taking into account the patient’s age and the presence of risk factors for developing the disease.
Risk factors for osteoporosis can be divided into 2 groups: predisposing (independent of the person himself) and modifiable (depending on lifestyle and behavior and can be eliminated).
Although predisposing factors (including age, gender, and family history) determine whether a person is at increased risk for osteoporosis, modifiable factors play a key role in the development of the disease. Modifiable factors, such as proper nutrition and physical activity, help build healthy bone tissue in youth and maintain bone density in adulthood, preventing bone loss in older people. This means that it is within the power of every person to maintain their bone tissue and prevent its decline throughout life.
The gold standard for early diagnosis of osteoporosis is the measurement of bone mineral density - X-ray densitometry . This is a painless test that takes a few minutes. Densitometry results will help assess the risk of fractures and select the necessary treatment.
Work in the osteoporosis department (Minsk City Center for Osteoporosis and Diseases of the Musculoskeletal System) is currently organized from 8.00. until 16.00 every day, except weekends (Saturday and Sunday) and holidays.
The initial appointment is by appointment. Appointment vouchers, in accordance with the established schedule, are distributed among the city’s clinics, in proportion to the population living in the territory of this clinic. For the repeated admission of dispensary patients, a reserve of coupons is provided.
Based on the results of the consultation, dispensary and dynamic observation groups are formed with the development and monitoring of the implementation of individual rehabilitation programs and preventive measures in order to slow down the rate of progression of osteoporosis and its complications.
If there are indications, the patient, upon the referral of the Center’s doctors, undergoes an additional examination on an outpatient basis at the 1st City Clinical Hospital: biochemical blood test, blood test for markers of bone metabolism, X-ray densitometry.
