Colds while breastfeeding.

Colds during the cold season do not bypass breastfeeding women either. However, there is no need to despair in this situation. You can create the most reliable protective barrier using the following recommendations:

  • Do not stop breastfeeding your baby during this period. Your child is protected from infection much earlier than symptoms of the disease begin to appear. With milk he receives antibodies to the causative agent of the disease. Acute respiratory diseases are not a contraindication to breastfeeding. Therefore, feed your child healthily, but wearing a mask. The mask must be changed every 2 hours. It is your breast milk that provides your baby with immune protection against all possible complications.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly. The virus can be transmitted in two ways: through airborne droplets and through touch. It is necessary to regularly wash your hands before contacting your child, which will protect him from infection.
  • Be sure to get treatment. How exactly should a nursing woman be treated for infection? It all depends on the type of pathogen and the condition of the mother. But there are a few key rules. A high temperature can and should be reduced if a woman does not tolerate it well. Paracetamol during breastfeeding is sometimes simply an irreplaceable thing. This drug will help get rid of headaches and reduce fever. At the same time, it will not cause any harm to either the mother or the baby. This is the safest remedy available today.
  • To treat viral infections (colds, flu, etc.), in addition to antipyretic and symptomatic drugs, special antiviral agents based on interferon preparations can be used. But your doctor should prescribe such medications for you. Although some of them, for example genferon, viferon, can be used independently. It is better to discuss other antiviral drugs with your doctor.
  • To treat a bacterial infection (otitis media, tonsillitis, pyelonephritis, mastitis, etc.), a course of antibiotics is required. Their choice, dosage and rules of administration only on the recommendation of a specialist.
  • To relieve nasal congestion during lactation, use medications to relieve swelling from the mucous membrane, which will help restore normal breathing (saline solutions and vasoconstrictors).
  • For a woman who is breastfeeding, the ideal option for a sore throat would be topical antiseptics. To rinse, you can use store-bought solutions (for example, Chlorhexidine) or homemade solutions (with sea salt).
  • To combat a nursing mother's cough, you can resort to natural-based remedies, such as licorice and thyme. During lactation, it is not prohibited to take medications based on ambroxol. The greatest effectiveness will be achieved by inhalation with this substance. It is convenient to carry out this procedure using a nebulizer (a device for inhalation).

It is very important to treat a cold and not forget about your well-being! With the right therapy, relief comes on day 3, but some symptoms may persist for up to 7-10 days. In doubtful situations, you should consult a doctor for advice. This way you can avoid complications such as sore throat, sinusitis and pneumonia.
