February 29 – International Day of Rare (Orphan) Diseases
February 29 – International Day of Rare (Orphan) Diseases
29.02.2024
February 29 (February 28 in non-leap years) is Rare Disease Day. The date is symbolic: a rare date means rare diseases.
The event helps advance advocacy work for people with rare diseases locally, nationally and internationally.
Rare (orphan) diseases are diseases that affect a small part of the population and occur infrequently. Among them are immunodeficiencies, various diseases of the blood and hematopoietic organs, spinal muscular atrophy, phenylketonuria, mucopolysaccharidoses, rare cancer and other diseases.
According to studies, rare diseases affect 3.5%-5.9% of the world's population, which is equivalent to 300 million people worldwide. Currently, about 7 thousand rare diseases (congenital, hematological, oncological, autoimmune, etc.) have been described, 72% of them are genetic, almost 1 out of 5 cancers are rare.
In order to organize the provision of medical care to patients with orphan diseases, the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus organized a preliminary registration and schedule of meetings with authorized persons of public organizations representing the interests of patients with orphan diseases.
