Thyroid surgery
For the first time in the region, Japanese specialists performed such an operation three years ago. Since then, the technique of Japanese colleagues has been successfully mastered here - more than 50 patients have been operated on.
Unlike the traditional surgical method of treating thyroid pathology, endoscopic intervention occurs through a small incision in the subclavian region and is accompanied by slight blood loss. As a result, patients recover from the postoperative state more easily, the rehabilitation period is much faster, and most importantly, there is no such cosmetic defect as a postoperative scar on the neck. That is why such operations are most in demand among young women, the interlocutor noted.
“All over the world, priority is now given to so-called minimally invasive surgery, when intervention in any organ occurs through a small incision. We are trying to keep up with the times,” said the chief physician of the medical institution, Alexander Karpitsky. “Our hospital has made a big leap in terms of endoscopic operations They are performed both in the abdominal cavity for diseases of the esophagus and on the chest. As for endoscopic interventions on the thyroid gland, we are so far the only ones not only in Belarus, but also in Europe who have implemented the development of Japanese doctors,” Alexander emphasized. Karpitsky.
For the first time, surgery on the thyroid gland using endoscopic equipment was performed at the Brest Regional Hospital in the fall of 2010 by a group of Japanese surgeons led by Professor Shimizu from the Tokyo Center for Endocrine Surgery. Brest doctors have successfully mastered the methods of their Japanese colleagues. In addition, the surgeon of the first surgical department, Igor Radzievsky, attended an internship in Japan. Endoscopic operations on the thyroid gland in the regional hospital were put on stream. By the way, mainly for these merits, Igor Radzievsky received the title “Person of the Year” in the field of medicine in 2012.
In the regional hospital, about 50 patients were operated on using the new method over three years. All this time, Brest doctors performed the removal of one lobe or half of the thyroid gland (hemithyroidectomy). Less than a month ago, after another master class by Japanese surgeons, a total thyroidectomy, that is, complete removal of the thyroid gland, was performed using endoscopic equipment. Thus, the list of indications has been expanded, and in addition to nodular pathology, such operations can be performed on patients with toxic goiters.
“Since these operations are mainly of a cosmetic nature, we plan to carry them out on a paid basis. Our economists are now calculating the costs. I will say that they will not be too expensive for Belarusian citizens. For foreigners, of course, there will be a different price. By the way, in Japan this is the operation costs about $2 thousand. I have no doubt that this medical service will be in demand by our closest neighbors from Ukraine and Russia,” said the head physician of the Brest Regional Hospital.
According to the regional endocrinological clinic, about 72 thousand residents of the region suffer from various diseases of the thyroid gland.
